Connect AI tools (MCP)
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI tools such as coding assistants and chat applications use outside knowledge. Wissenstifter offers an MCP server, so you can ask your organization's knowledge from the tool you already work in.
What the tools can do
Once connected, your AI tool gets three Wissenstifter functions. You do not call them by name: ask in plain language and your AI tool picks the right one.
| Function | What it does |
|---|---|
search | Answers a question from the knowledge documents of the groups you are a member of. Only approved documents are used. An answer can take a few seconds. |
list_knowledge_documents | Lists knowledge documents from your groups with title, interviewee and group, up to the 50 most recently updated. |
get_knowledge_document | Returns the full content of one knowledge document. |
list_knowledge_documents and get_knowledge_document can also show documents that have not been approved yet. Only search is limited to approved documents.
You sign in as yourself, so every function only sees what you can see in Wissenstifter. If you administer your organization, list_knowledge_documents and get_knowledge_document cover the documents of all groups, while search still only uses the groups you are a member of.
The address of your server
Each organization has its own server address:
https://mcp.wissenstifter.ai/tenants/<name>Replace <name> with the short name of your organization. Ask your administrator if you do not know it.
Add the server to your AI tool
Most AI tools that support MCP read their servers from a JSON configuration. Add Wissenstifter with your own address:
{
"mcpServers": {
"wissenstifter": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://mcp.wissenstifter.ai/tenants/<name>"
}
}
}Where this file lives and how the keys are named depends on your tool; see its documentation on MCP servers. The first time your tool uses the server, it opens the Wissenstifter login in your browser. Sign in with your usual account and confirm the access request.
Not every AI tool can connect yet. Step-by-step guides for single tools will follow.
WARNING
AI tools can make mistakes. Check anything important against the knowledge document it comes from.
